History

  • Ancient Significance: Nakhon Ratchasima, commonly known as Korat, has been a cultural and political hub since the Dvaravati period (6th–11th centuries). Later, it became part of the Khmer Empire, evident from ancient ruins like Phimai Historical Park.
  • Strategic Importance: Korat served as a frontier city during the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin eras, protecting Siam from invasions from the northeast.
  • Thao Suranari: The province is closely associated with Thao Suranari (Lady Mo), a local heroine who led the defense against Laotian invaders in 1826. A statue honoring her stands in Korat city center.
